Sustainable development
Our business and management practices support sustainable development. Before making investment and business decisions, we always consider environmental and social governance factors. And we actively contribute to the environmentally and socially responsible finance sector by promoting green products and services.
Environment
In order to ensure that future generations enjoy a cleaner tomorrow, Desjardins Insurance has significantly reduced its eco-footprint by:
- Reducing business travel and fuel consumption by opting for web and video conferences
- Reducing paper use and rolling out paperless billing to our clients
- Encouraging responsible purchasing
- Improving the energy efficiency of our buildings and equipment
- Encouraging employees to use our Desjardins Alternative Transportation Program
- Supporting the Climate Reality Project – a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about the urgency of the climate crisis in Canada.
We are also proud to share that Desjardins Group pioneered the responsible investment movement in Canada and continues to be one of the leading proponents of environmentally-conscious investing in Canada today. For more information about Desjardins Group’s Responsible Finance Strategy and other environmental initiatives, please see the 2019 Social and Cooperative Responsibility Report (pages 70-104).
Planting trees with Tree Canada
Tree Canada is a charity dedicated to planting and nurturing trees. Since 1992, they’ve planted more than 82 million trees and helped restore places hit by natural disasters.
We partnered with Tree Canada to plant a tree for every customer who signs up for a paper-free account between June 22 and July 31, 2020.
When you switch to Paper-Free or create a Paper-Free Online Services account, it benefits you and the environment.
Fighting climate change
Desjardins Insurance is a proud supporter of the Climate Reality Project, led by the David Suzuki Foundation and Al Gore. Its mission is to raise awareness about the climate crisis and implement solutions to address this issue.

Charitable partnerships
As a leading insurer in Canada, we partner with various organizations to engage communities in becoming safer and more aware of the risks that face them.
Parachute
Car crashes are the number one cause of death for young people between the ages of 15 and 20. We work with Parachute to help make a difference and bring these numbers down.
Traffic Injury Research Foundation
The Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) is Canada's leading research institute on road safety. Since 1964, TIRF has been evaluating and sharing their findings to help prevent injuries and death on Canadian roads.
In addition to supporting the Traffic Injury Research Fund by raising awareness about road-safety research, DGIG also provides funding to the organization each year to aid in their efforts to reduce the number of accident related injuries and fatalities on our roadways.
Canada Safety Council
The Canada Safety Council (CSC) is a national organization that is solely dedicated to the safety of Canadians. Through their various training programs, awareness campaigns, publications and ongoing advocacy, the CSC is able to help prevent damage to property, injury and death.
Arrive Alive
Working with various community partners, Arrive Alive has been identifying, implementing and supporting initiatives to eliminate impaired driving.
Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction
The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) is Canada's only agency with a legislated national mandate to reduce the harms of alcohol and other drugs on Canadian society.
Operation Red Nose
We believe it’s important to create positive change in our communities. That’s why DGIG is proud to be the lead sponsor of Quebec’s Operation Red Nose – an annual holiday-themed initiative designed to help reduce drinking and driving and support organizations dedicated to youth issues. As the campaign’s official insurer, we provide insurance coverage for all of the initiatives’ facilities, equipment and vehicles.
Community involvement
In addition to our support for organizations such as United Way and the Red Cross, we’ve developed numerous programs that are designed to help better the communities in which we operate.
The Desjardins Disaster Relief Fund
The Desjardins Disaster Relief Fund provides emergency financial assistance to clients of Desjardins General Insurance Group and The Personal as well as members of Desjardins caisses in Quebec after a loss not covered by their insurance policy.
The Desjardins Cares and Shares Campaign
Every year, our employees take part in this campaign by making donations to United Way, the Red Cross and the Desjardins Foundation. Desjardins Insurance also makes its own corporate contribution.
The P&C Insurance Outreach Program
A program that was created in 2015 to encourage and promote volunteering by employees. Through the program, Desjardins Insurance donates to the organizations supported by its employees.
