The COVID-19 pandemic has hit a lot of businesses. But every situation is different, so we’ve adopted special measures and a flexible approach so we can provide help based on your unique needs.

Additional auto insurance refund

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an exceptional situation where many Canadians are working from home and using their cars much less, and that’s lowered the risk of road accidents. Over the past few months, we’ve seen a drop in car insurance claims, and we want to share the savings with you.


Is your personal or commercial vehicle insured with us?

  • You get an automatic refund on your car insurance premium.
  • You don’t need to call us to get your refund. We’ll apply it automatically to car insurance policies in force on June 30, 2020.

Other relief measures

With many businesses being forced to close due to emergency measures, we understand that it’s a tough time to be a business owner. Here are some of the ways we’re helping.

Protecting property used by your employees working from home

You or your employees may be working from home to keep your business running, so we’ve enhanced coverage on our Commercial Property Insurance – Broad Form:

  • We’re temporarily enhancing the extension of coverage for contents outside your place of business to now include your commercial property at your employees’ homes. This will not change the coverage amount on your policy.
  • We’re also temporarily increasing the coverage amount for property in transit to $25,000. If your policy already covers you for a higher amount, that amount won’t change.

These relief measures apply automatically to policies in force before April 30, 2020. You don’t need to call us to get the coverage and we won’t send you any policy updates.

Helping you make deliveries to keep your business running

  • If you run a restaurant, pharmacy, grocery, food or pet store, and for now you’re making deliveries with your commercial vehicles, we’re offering you temporary auto insurance coverage for deliveries at no extra charge.
  • This coverage applies automatically to commercial vehicles already insured with us before April 2, 2020. There’s no need to call us.
    • This coverage will not be added if deliveries are made via third party apps and services like UberEats, Skip the Dishes, Instacart and Amazon Flex. These services remain a prohibited use.

Supporting you if you’re facing cash flow problems

Despite support from governments and financial institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic, your business might still be facing a cash flow squeeze.

  • We’ve adopted measures for businesses that have been forced to halt operations temporarily or that are running below capacity due to the COVID-19 crisis.
  • We’ll take the time to analyze requests, based on each unique situation.


Additional auto insurance refund

Am I eligible?

  • You need to have an auto insurance policy with Desjardins Insurance in force on June 30, 2020
  • You need to insure a personal passenger vehicle or a commercial vehicle (motorcycles and recreational vehicles are not eligible)
  • If you’re eligible, we’ll apply your refund automatically. You don’t need to apply or call us.

I cancelled my auto policy before June 30, am I eligible?

No. To be eligible you need to have a policy in force on June 30, 2020.

How is the refund calculated?

The refund is 30% or 40%* of one month’s auto insurance premium. It’s the same calculation for personal and commercial vehicles. Let’s say your annual premium on June 30 is $1,200. That means your premium for one month is $100, so your refund will be $30 or $40.

What if I have 2 cars on my insurance policy or more than one policy, will I get a refund for each one?

You’ll receive a refund for each auto insurance policy, based on the number of cars on the policy.

How will the refund be paid and when will I get it?

You should receive your refund in the next few weeks. Your refund will be applied using the same payment method you use to pay your insurance premium. For instance, if you pay by pre-authorized debit, we’ll deposit your refund into the account we have on file.

If you pay by cheque, we’ll send your refund by cheque and you may have to wait a little longer to receive your refund. Thank you for your patience.

If I change how much I use my car in the next few months because I’m working from home, can I update my insurance policy?

Yes. Just call your Desjardins agent to update the annual mileage for one or more vehicles on your policy.

I have home insurance with you. Will I get a refund on my premium?

No. We’re giving our car insurance customers a refund because we had fewer than expected car insurance claims in recent months.

What will happen if the pandemic goes on for much longer?

We’re staying on top of government directives as the situation evolves. For now, this refund applies to policies in force on June 30, 2020.

Making deliveries

Because of the pandemic, I’m now offering a delivery service. Am I covered? Do I need to notify you?

If you run a restaurant, pharmacy, grocery or pet food store, and you’re now temporarily making deliveries with your commercial vehicles, we’re adding temporary coverage for deliveries at no extra charge.

  • This coverage applies automatically for vehicles already insured with us before April 2, 2020. If this is your situation, there’s no need to call us.
  • For other types of deliveries, please contact us.

Because of the pandemic, I’ve added more delivery vehicles. Do I need to notify you?

If you’ve hired new drivers and/or increased your mileage, it’s important to let us know. Call us and we’ll check if your coverage needs to be changed.
