5 tips for driving safely in the rain

Driving in bad weather can be a stressful experience. We’ve put together 5 easy tips to help you stay safe when you’re driving through heavy rain and other difficult weather conditions.
Slow down
Speed limit signs are designed to indicate the fastest speed you should be travelling in ideal conditions. When you’re driving through heavy rain, sleet or snow, you must adapt your speed to the current weather conditions.
Stay focused
Being alert is easily one of the best ways to keep yourself safe on the road – especially when you’re stuck in bad weather.
Turn on your headlights
Did you know it’s against the law to drive without your headlights on when travelling in low visibility conditions? Get yourself in the habit of turning on your headlights when weather conditions are worsening.
Be prepared for the possibility of hydroplaning
Hydroplaning can happen when there’s a lot of water on the road. Your tires lose traction because they can’t displace water fast enough, and your car can start to slide uncontrollably. If this happens to you, slowly let your foot off the accelerator and steer straight until you regain proper traction.
Turn off cruise control
It’s tempting to think that cruise control will help you drive safely in adverse weather conditions – but if your vehicle hydroplanes while you’re in cruise control, the car can actually speed up instead of slowing down.
